1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass
This car could easily be mistaken for a car straight from an estate sale, and at one point this Cutlass certainly was that car. Sold new in Bethpage, NY, this car built a reputation as a serious street racer. While the comfy Oldsmobile character has been preserved since new, the car had run as fast as 10.30 while on the squeeze.
The car is now retired from its official racing career, but it still serves dutifully as a certified street terror. We recently modernized the Olds 463 powerplant, based on the desirable 1968 455 block fitted with an Eagle crank and rods, KB pistons, and a serious Milodon oiling system. The top end is all aluminum from Edelbrock, and a stout Comp roller moves the valves. A custom-built annular-discharge 950 Holley feeds the fully-ported intake, and Kooks headers feed the 3" exhaust. The trans is a built 200R4 from a Buick GN with a mild converter, and the rear axle is an M9 unit fitted with 3.70 gears. The car's drag shocks have given way to Bilsteins, and a modest audio system was added.
The car retains functional AC and all power options, and thanks to time spent dialing it in, it has excellent street manners, aided by the enormous amount of torque under foot. We really, really like this car, and we make sure it sees the road very often.
